the wvs ‘care for dogs’ shelter in chiang mai, thailand cares for abandoned, abused and injured dogs every day, every week and every year. the aim of the shelter is to provide essential emergency and long-term veterinary care, which ultimately improves the lives of the abandoned, abused and injured dogs living on and off the streets in chiang mai. the shelter also aims to humanely reduce the numbers of unwanted stray and abandoned dogs by running sterilisation projects (in conjunction with the thailand itc) the shelter and its staff of volunteers are caring for these dogs and have a constant stream of emergency cases.
the shelter is their sanctuary, their home and a place where they can be cared for until they can find their new forever home. however, the dogs at the shelter continuously need new homes and the shelter works to achieve this. there are some dogs that despite best endeavours will never find a ‘forever home’, for these dogs, the shelter will continue to champion them and they will live out the rest of their lives at the shelter, being cared for. they need us and they need you, to provide them with the care that they so desperately need.
local residents are aware that wvs care for dogs offers medical treatment for street dogs who would otherwise be left untreated and will bring them directly to the wvs site just outside of the city. in cases where the dog is at risk of further injury from fighting with other dogs, being poisoned by people, hit by cars etc, wvs thailand will take the dog in as a resident and try to match the dog with a new home.
these behavior issues can cause the owners to resent their new pure breed puppies and they often find their way on to the streets, adding to the population of non-sterilised dogs with behavior issues in local neighbourhoods. with an education program earmarked for 2018, wvs is set to continue to aid the population of chiang mai through targeted lessons aimed at the younger generation so that a shift in culture and attitudes towards street dogs can be fostered from an early age. some of the street dogs are lucky enough to have people around that will lay down food and water for them but many are left to scrounge and scavenge on their own.
